Perspective of Aging Paper Essay Example for Free
Perspective of Aging Paper Essay Aging, the process of developing or growing old; the progression of changes in appearance (American Heritage Dictionary, 2007). The role of the media is to educate and inform as well as other masses; the senior population suffers greatly from negative stereotyping than any other age group. Some media outlets portray aging in a stereotypical way relating old age to death or disease. This essay reflects on how older Americans are portrayed through the different media outlets. Television shows and commercial advertisements, news and magazines are three types of media outlets that depict older Americans. Television definitely stereotypes the elderly as it relates to their mental capabilities as well as their physical capabilities. Television shows and movie roles feature senior citizens through a lens of less value placing emphasis on the burdens of growing old. These roles show seniors as passive, weak, simple minded and incapable of doing things on their own and not being able to take care of themselves. For example an older movie called ââ¬Å"The Cocoonâ⬠depicts older adults as dying and withering away until they found the fountain of youth and things that was done in their younger years, which now is a memory suddenly becomes everyday fascinations. It is not that seniors cannot function; it is more like they chose not to. Commercials advertise senior ageing creams that get rid of wrinkles all over the body especially under the eyes showing signs of aging while hair dying products gets rid of the unwanting grey; commercials also advertise different medical devices that can help seniors move around better or pick things up from a distance without moving out of their favorite chair. There are various commercials that advertiser life insurance or burial expenses. Another media outlet that depict older adults would be radio through entertainment for example when an older adult fall, they may not be able to pick themselves up and comedians will make a joke out of it with laughter. The media has the power that will allow people to have a preconceived notion to an audience as truth; the media can decide what way of life is acceptable and what is not. Media plays a critical part in shaping and reflecting public opinion. There has been a widespread of negative attitudes about aging in print in such magazines as Time or Newsweek that displays photographs of seniors looking disoriented as if they were lost; given the impression they cannot care for themselves based on the articles content. In closing, The overall impressions that the media offers about the older adult is by emphasizing the vulnerabilities of seniors in such a manner that gives the impression that being old is the thing that we as humans most want to avoid, so beauty creams that are offered that can remove wrinkles, telephones that are made with large face buttons, hearing aids that are sold with the message that you dont know what youre missing are just selling points. Many forms of plastic surgery are supposed to be the remedy for staying beautiful and looking young; Just about anything associated with getting older is portrayed as something people dont want to happen. The unfortunate downside of this barrage of negative messaging about becoming older is that it reinforces the thought that being older is being unwanted and no longer valuable to a fast moving beautiful world of people whose desire is to stay young, fresh faced, attractive and to be old, is to not be a welcome part of this society. Individuals should value the aging process in older adults because it is an unavoidable part of life that has it own special values and can offer so many things to the younger generations no matter what stage of life one might be in. The wisdom and information of the older adult offers a calming confidence to society that beauty does come in many forms and can be expressed in many ways and that it does not have to have a sexy component to it to be beautiful and desirable. The growing numbers of baby boomers in this society is bringing a new focus on how exciting and active the older citizen can be and that the contributions to government, science and entertainment and every facet of life is enriched by those who have lived long lives and are still actively giving back to society in countless ways new and creative views of how beautiful it can be to grow older and be appreciated for who you are and not how old you are. Marketing Plan for Soft Drink Company
Marketing Plan for Soft Drink Company This report will serve as a marketing plan to introduce an innovative Orange drink by the name of Orangee in the UK market. Orangee would be a revolution in the beverage industry of UK as the proposed market plan is covering all aspects of the marketing such as the target customers, current market situation and preferences of people. This report will draft out various marketing strategies and market analysis of the competitors and prospect of the launching of this drink in the UK market. The proposed marketing strategies are strong enough to raise Orangee market size up to 1 million people and a forecasted sale of up to 5 million pounds yearly. Further, the quality of product would be of utmost importance. This will help a great deal in order to consider the product for export at a later time which will definitely shoot up the profits considerably. Export potential will be considered in Eastern Europe where there is a slump in the beverage industry. Several beverage companies in Eastern Europe have failed to address the demands of the local customers so there is a huge opportunity there to excel the drink which could be a part of our business provided the type of response we get in UK after the launch of the drink. Orangee Introduction: Orangee will be a bottled orange drink with Orange colour used as the main theme for the packaging to make it attractive and also for the promotion of the drink. The concentration of pure oranges in drink will be more than 90 percent with fractional artificial flavours and taste enhancers to make the drink more striking to the consumers. Further, the drink price will be economical and easily affordable for the majority of the people in UK. For the purpose of initial testing of the market, the introductory price of Orangee would be fractionally lower than its competitors. After the response of the market, the new price would then be introduced. With comparing it with some of the orange juice competitors like Nestle Orange juice, Tropicana Orange Juice; Orangee will prove itself as the best budget drink with high quality and low price. Target Market: Thorough market research and deep analysis is instrumental in hitting your target market with a bang. Factors such as market trends, buyers intentions, statistical demand analysis, test marketing etc are critical in determining the sale potential. Target market can be more than one and different marketing strategies need to be applied for the different target markets as according to William M. Pride (2009) a firm uses one marketing mix to reach one target market and a separate one for the other. For the case of Orangee, no specific demographic market was chosen. Instead our goal is to develop the product to be used by consumers of both genders and all ages, from infants to seniors. It is attended to be launch as a family product in order to give them an alternative for other sub-standard or expensive Orange juices. Marketing Tools and Techniques: Most of the businessmen at the initial stage of launching their product are a bit hesitant in spending lavishly on the marketing but nothing could be further from the truth. Proper product marketing is very critical and to have a defensive approach for that could almost certainly doom the product to failure. According to Sylva-Michele Sternkopf (2005: 107) majority of the companies interviewed for marketing tools stated that their increased profits reflects the importance of their marketing tools. So, this shows the importance and relevance of marketing tools for businesses to run successfully. Following are the marketing tools that will be incurred for the marketing of Orangee: Well Structured and Comprehensive Website As Orangee has a fair bit of budget as mentioned above, so nothing can be as good as a well designed website. It will be a first impression of the company and will be launched a moth before the launching of Orangee to make it popular among customers. It will be a comprehensive site covering all the aspects of the product including its competitors, price, offers etc. The expenses required to build the website would be 1000 pounds and would have 300 pounds for its maintenance each month. Brochures Brochures are yet another effective marketing tool for the purpose of the Orangee marketing. According to Scott C. Gladden (1996: 74) Brochures are the most informative marketing tool which can be used a direct hand-out or a mailer. It is a very inexpensive yet successful way of promoting the product. Brochures will be distributed in busy places like shopping malls, parks, educational institutions, tube stations etc. Newspaper Advertisements The only thing that can be better than cheap publicity is free publicity as newspaper advertisements provides just that. As nothing much the company has to do for it as the newspaper advertisements promotes the product automatically. It is also a very inexpensive marketing tool with effective outcomes. Timely and frequent promotions about Orangee price updates, special offers etc would be given in the best selling newspapers of UK. Television If the sales picks up in the introductory stage, then we can also think about promoting Orangee through television. At the time of launching the product, it can be a bit risky to invoke television for the purpose of marketing for it being the most expensive medium for marketing. Developing Orangee Branding: Branding is a single best buzzword in the marketing industry. Branding basically lays the basis for the marketing success of the product. According to Bill Chiaravalle (2006) Branding makes selling easier and develop a level of trust between the buyer and the company. Branding Philosophy: Branding is the process of changing minds. Just as products are created with hands, the brands are created with mind. For the purpose of promoting Orangee, people can be convinced by Brand awareness like Orangee is Vitamin C enriched or Having Orangee daily is a great way of strengthening body resistance etc. For the branding of Orangee, the tag line we are going to use will be OrangeE: Squeezed just the way you want. This tag line relates a lot with the product and will be used almost everywhere where the product is promoted like on the website, brochures, newspaper advertisements. Logo highlights the product branding part and so is for Orangee nevertheless. Logo of Orangee will set the overall impression of the product on the customers. A ripe orange in the partially squeezed form will be the logo for Orangee and would somehow relate with the above mentioned tagline also. Orangee Life Cycle: According to Anselmi Immonen (2008: 9) Product life cycle refers to a concept and a set of systematic phases that attempts to control the product information previously described. Product life cycle analysis of our product and other related products helps in identifying different loopholes in our product. Following are the key phases of Orangee life cycle: Growing: Material used to make fertilizers and pesticides. Fuel needed to set up the soil for planting. Watering in order to nourish the orange trees. Harvesting: Fuel to operate the harvesting equipment and delivering oranges to the processing premises. Processing: Equipment and Man-power needed to produce the orange juice. Water needed for washing and preparing orange juice. Usage of additives like sugar, taste enhancers etc Packaging: Materials and energy used for preparing Orangee juice containers and packing boxes. Distribution: Fuel required for transporting Orangee to stores. Retail: Electricity requirement in stores for refrigerating Orangee. Disposal: Fuel to transfer the wasted containers to the waste-yard or recycling place. Comparison of Orangee with Nestle Product Life Cycle: Nestle Orange juice is market pioneer and at the time of its introduction, its profits were negative. It was mainly due to the reason of its low sales and high distribution and promotion expenses. The other reason for its bad launching was its unawareness in the rural areas. But later on during the growth stage of Nestle life cycle, its profits sky rocketed by their effective promotion and formulating of new price strategies. And until now till its maturity, Nestle has sustained itself as standard orange juice providers and are a tough competitor for Orangee to compete with.

Does the humble telephone lines play a major role in shaping the third millennium? Can a mere pair of thin copper wires twisted around each other transmit Internet data reliably and securely at blazing fast speed, making it possible to view high-quality moving images, sound and vast amounts of data on your personal computer screen or television? The answer is yes, as the growing success of DSL (digital subscriber line) technology abundantly demonstrates. The capacity of a communications channel depends on its bandwidth and its signal-to-noise ratio. A voice connection through a conventional phone network uses a bandwidth of about 3,000 hertz (Hz): from about 300 Hz to 3,300 Hz. An analog modem operating at 33.6 kilobits per second (kbps) requires a slightly wider bandwidth 3,200 Hz and needs a very good connection, one with a high signal-to-noise ratio. Modems operating at 56 kbps achieve their rates by taking advantage of digital connections that circumvent some sources of noise in transmissions toward the end user. But these bit rates are far from the maximum possible on a twisted pair alone. One process that limits bandwidth and signal strength is the steady attenuation of the signal as it travels down the line, with the higher frequencies being affected more severely. Greater capacity is therefore available if the lines are kept short. Originally, the Discrete Multitone approach was intended for sending entertainment video over telephone wires. Because such use relies principally on one-way transmission, most of the subchannels were devoted to the \\"downstream\\" signal, carrying about 6 Mbps, with about 0.6 Mbps available in the other direction. This asymmetric form of DSL has become known as ADSL, and the signal coding is now a worldwide standard. Although the video application has not yet borne fruit, asymmetric transmission fortuitously lends itself to browsing on the World Wide Web. Over the past year ADSL has begun to be widely installed in telephon e networks for always-on Internet access, typically operating at several hundreds of kbps or higher over phone wires up to about 5.5 kilometers in length. The beauty of ADSL, unlike the multilevel coding used in HDSL, is that the data can use channels operating above the voice frequency band, so a single phone line can simultaneously transmit voice and high-speed data. The newest standard of ADSL is G lite which is just for home users, a global standard that limits the data rates to 1.

All My Sons By Author Miller - Discuss the ways in which the characters of Joe and Chris are presented in the play. mitigate. Go onto discuss how a clash between them is inevitable. 1. Discuss the ways in which the characters of Joe and Chris are presented in the play. mitigate 2. Go onto discuss how a clash between them is inevitable. 3. Discuss how the clash arises from the difference in their values. As the play progresses, the characteristics, personality and values of both Joe and Chris Keller are revealed slowly. At the beginning, Joe is described as a rather popular man who is sociable and respected among his friends. He enjoys spending time with his neighbors. He is successful in his business; he gives us an impression of a pragmatic, self-made, man among men. He is described as a good husband and a loving, sensible father. He cares about his family and puts them at a high priority. However, his lack in education and a "peasant-like common sense" resulted in his minimal insight and judgment of the world and the things around him. Although he is not very bright, he is quite frank about it and willing to admit it which is shown in a dialogue between Joe Keller and Frank Lubey where Joe casually proclaimes: "When you look at a page like this you realize how ignorant you are" when he was reading the newspaper. From what he said, it also suggests that he is also somewhat defensive about it. His personality also led to much admiration from his friends and family. At one point, Chris even made a nickname for his father, calling him "Joe McGuts" This shows that he is still well respected after the dramatic indecent with the cracked cylinder heads and how other still think he pulled a fas... ...ight fail and collapse and all his hard work devoted on saving the business for his sons would be ruined. He felt that it was the right thing to do; he does not believe he was guilty in any way. He also felt that everybody else worked for a profit during the war and thought that he ought to as well. The business is the furthest his mind could see. The lives of 21 men meant little to him when it comes to the business. The conscience of what has had done wasn't there, it was real to him. Joe did not realize how the attitude that he adopted would have such a large impact on Chris. Chris was totally shocked by his father's doings. It violated his principles and beliefs altruism and selflessness. He became confused and failed to know what to do with his father. This shattered all trust and bonding between father and son, he failed to close his eyes on guilt.
Brewing Change at Breckenridge Brewery Essay -- Case Study, Business M
Brewing Change at Breckenridge Brewery INTRODUCTION Breckenridge Brewery is a craft brewer which was established by Richard Squire. Richard turned his passion for brewing good home made beer into a lucrative business. In 1989, he started his first Breckenridge Brewery and Pub at Breckenridge which has a production capacity of 3,000 barrels per year. During his first two years in business, he sold out the brewery's annual maximum capacity. He opened a second brewery and brew pub in Denver in November 1992. By the end of 1994, even this brewery failed to satisfy the increased demand and plans were made for a new brewery which opened in May 1996 in Denver. This brewery had a maximum output of 60,000 barrels per year after expansion. In the mid 1990s, Breckenridge Brewery started expanding eastwards and their first brewpub outside Colorado opened in Buffalo, New York in December 1995. Five other brewpubs were subsequently opened in other states. However, from its opening till 1997, the brewpubs have not turned in a profit although the main brewery was making money. Richard believes that his vision for the company, a two-tiered concept with a top microbrewery producing fresh, quality beer and a chain of brewpubs, has potential. However, due to the more complex nature of running a restaurant, he believes that the company has yet to figure out how to run its restaurant business profitably. The company is now at the crossroads. Richard is in a dilemma as to whether to continue the brewpub business or to give it up and just concentrate just on brewing beer. He is also unsure about bringing in new leadership to help solve the company?s performance problems. THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT A firm?s external environment is divided into three major areas : the general, industry and competitor environments. Below is an elaboration in further detail regarding the firm?s opportunities and threats in these three environments. Opportunities in the General Environment The United States of America has a population of 260 million people. This is a big market with substantial purchasing power. As of 1997, Breckenridge Brewery has only expanded eastwards and the west side of the country is relatively untouched. According to Exhibit 2 in the case study, there were only distributors in 32 states and that leaves a potential to sell to the other 19 states as w... ... a year. To cater to increased demand, the company can consider acquiring other breweries that are going out of business and that will see substantial savings on capital investments. It will be advantageous for the company if they can project themselves as responsible corporate citizen and an environment friendly company. Social enrichment schemes, recycling schemes and educational funds can be initiated to cater to this cause and long term goal. CONCLUSION Breckenridge Brewery has a strong business in brewing beer. Due to the lack of professional management expertise and venturing into the wrong business, the company has not been able to turn in a profit. It is important that the company try to resolve these problems as soon as possible. Only then, will the company get out of the red and hopefully, move on to a higher level. Independant Study Program Essay
It is not the pedigree or the school that is the mark of success but rather the ability of an individual to use the training and the education. This is something that I have always believed all my life. I have never been intimidated by those who come from private schools and neither have I been intimidated by those who go to conventional high schools. I have been firm in my belief that there is so much more that I can gain from an independent study program. The best education is one that is flexible and can adapt to the necessities of todayââ¬â¢s world. Oftentimes, education in conventional high schools is strict and rigid. There is no room for creativity and very little room for self-discovery as one is limited by the confines of the classroom. This limitation stifles oneââ¬â¢s personal intellectual and psychological growth not to mention the contamination that comes from other sources a child is exposed to. There is no room for growth over and above what is uttered by teachers and instructors who are not so much motivated by the childââ¬â¢s educational development as they are by their next paycheck. This is the advantage that an independent study program provides. It is flexible enough to adjust to the needs of the student. It also allows those who are fast paced to explore other avenues that they wish to explore and learn about. It allows talented individuals to push the limits of their talents and fully achieve their potential. The manner by which independent study programs allow students to tailor fit their study programs is a definite advantage because it allows them to grow at a pace that is more comfortable to them. An education is something that is not fixed. It is not something that is forced on anyone. It is a partnership, a relationship between the teacher and the student that comes from an understanding of the limits of the student and the goals of the teacher. Education is about being the best that one can be.

Argument Against Gun Control Essay
Final Paper: Argument Against Gun Control The argument on firearm regulation has been a heated discussion for many years. On one side of the debate, we have people in favor placing restrictions on guns, while, on the opposite end of the spectrum, we have people fighting the regulation of guns. People in favor gun restrictions believe gun control can reduce crime ,while, the people against gun control believe having the right to bear arms is an effective crime deterrent. I believe that every law abiding citizen should be able to carry a gun and defend themselves against people who intend to harm them.Gun control laws are simply ineffective and they have an adverse effect on crime. Instead of reducing crime, gun control laws just simply take guns out the hands of good people and puts the guns into the hands of the bad guys. Gun control laws do not deter criminals from possessing firearms. Whether or not thereââ¬â¢s a law restricting gun use, criminal will always find a way to get a gun because criminals are less likely to obey laws. Thatââ¬â¢s why they are called ââ¬Å"criminalsâ⬠. Also thereââ¬â¢s no law that can stop the supply and demand of the illegal arms trade. If thereââ¬â¢s money to be made in the black market, someone will profit from it. Criminals can easily obtain a gun through the black market. An unnamed felon was quoted, ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s guns everywhere. If you got the money you, can get a gun.â⬠If a criminal wanted to get a gun, they are not likely to walk into a store to buy one. Therefore, they could care less whether they had a background check or not. No law can stop criminals from arming themselves to protect themselves. Most criminals have lots of enemies and they rather get caught with a gun than get caught without one. (Stossel). The more gun control rules and regulations there are, the happier the criminals will be, for they know the more gun laws there are the less chance they have of having a crime victim defend themselves with a lawfully-ownedà firearm. In many right to carry states, crime statistics are lower than the states with gun laws. The reason why is because guns are used more defensively than criminally. Criminals are usually rolling the dice when they are targeting law abiding citizens in right to carry states. (Polsby) Criminals do not fear the police or other authorities. What they fear most is the citizens who might be potentially armed. It makes it harder for criminals because they do not know what to expect from them if theyââ¬â¢re planning to rob them. Theyââ¬â¢re either fortunate to have an unarmed victim or they become a victim with a citizen that is ready to shoot and defend their families. (Stossel). Gun control laws only affect the citizens who follow the law. The law does not apply to the criminals. Regardless if theres a gun ban or not, criminals will find a way to obtain guns. The gun laws have no way in curtailing the illegal arms trade. In Chicago, handguns are not for sale legally. Only shotguns, rifles and ammunition can be bought with people with a Firearm Owners Identification Card. The Chicago area is one of the most difficult places to legally obtain a gun. In order to get a gun license, people have to go through a background check and wait up to a month to legally carry a weapon.(Polsby). While it is difficult to legally possess a gun, it is way more easier to illegally carry a gun in Chicago. There are thousands of unregistered firearms in the streets with thousands more coming in every month. Banning the sale handguns in Chicago makes no difference as well too. People can go elsewhere to buy a gun. They can go out of town or even out of state to buy a gun with Indiana and Wisconsin in close proximity.(Moorhouse and Warner). Another example why gun control law are ineffective is the staggering increase in crime in England since they imposed a ban on guns. In 1997, England passed a ban on all guns, which makes it illegal for all citizens to carry guns. Englandââ¬â¢s gun sanctions made it one of the most strictest law in the world. The new law only created an illusion of the country being more safer. Instead of reducing crime, the law put itââ¬â¢s citizens at the mercy of criminals who are well assured that their would be victims are unarmed and defenseless. In the two years after the law was enacted, gun related crimesà increased to 40% and armed robberies rose to 53%. From 1997 to 2001, violent crimes more than doubled. People are six times more likely to be robbed at gunpoint in London compared to New York. In the United States, the occurrence of home burglaries is 13% because the majority of burglars fear armed homeowners more than they fear the law. Englandââ¬â¢s burglary statistics are 5 t imes higher compared to the United States at 55%. Englandââ¬â¢s gun ban created the unintended consequences of lawlessness in the streets, as well as, it did not stop criminals from possessing guns and committing crimes. (Malcolm) Even in the United states where states and cities that passed strict gun laws have found them to be ineffective. The places where gun control laws are the most strictest are places that have the most crimes are committed with firearms.(Piquero). Of the 15 states that have the highest homicide rates, 10 have very restrictive gun laws. New York, for example, has one of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation has 20 percent of the nations total of armed robberies. Another example, Washington D.C., since guns were banned in 1976 the murder rate has risen 200 percent. In Chicago, the city consistently had one of the highest homicide rates in the nation since they enacted a ban on gun in 1982. In May 2010, a month before the Supreme Court overturned the ban, Chicago already had 113 homicides for the year.(Piquero). Since gun restriction laws were repealed by the Supreme court in 2010, Chicago and Washington D.C. received significantly lower crime rates. The murder rate in Chicago in the first six months of 2011 is 14% lower than the first six months of 2010. This is the first significant drop in the murder rate since gun sanctions were first passed in 1982. In 2008, the Supreme Court lifted the gun ban in D.C. in the case of the District of Columbia vs. Heller. Since the gun ban was repealed, the murder rate in D.C. has dropped 35% from 2008-2010. The rate of assault with weapons decreased by 37% and armed robberies fell as well too by 25% (Lott). These statistics further prove how ineffective gun control laws are. Not only they do not work in reducing crime they create adverse effects on crime. Instead, they make the problems worst. I believe that the right to bear arms is an unalienable right and I donââ¬â¢t believe that government have that right to take it away. I feel that all citizens have the right to protect themselves and their families. Gun laws restricting the use of guns does not help law abiding citizens. These laws only take away the ability of each citizens to defend themselves and makes us helpless against criminals. Gun control only creates an illusion that a society is safer and it does not solve the root cause crime. One cannot solve the crime problem by just simply taking away guns. The crime problem goes way deeper than just guns. Criminals will find a way to get guns regardless if theres a strict law or not . Most criminals are opportunist and having a strict gun law only gives them the opportunity to commit more crime with less worry about that person being armed. I believe that there is other ways to fight crime, however, I donââ¬â¢t believe gun control is the answer to making our world a safer place.
